Forward E-mail
Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail? Do you hate it? Every time you forward an e-mail there is information left over from the people who got the message before you, namely their e-mail addresses and names. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every e-mail address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That's right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel! How do you stop it? Well, there are two easy steps:
- When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That's right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the Forward button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don't click on Forward first, you won't be able to edit the message at all.
- Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the To: or Cc:columns for adding e-mail address. Always use the BCC:(blind carbon copy) column for listing the e-mail addresses. This is the way that people you send to only see their own e-mail address. If you don't see your BCC: option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say Undisclosed Recipients or none in the TO: field of the people who receive it.
- Remove any FW: in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling.
- ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail your reading. Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent.
Have you ever gotten an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses. A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein. If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition.

TopSave scanned photos that I want to send as an attachment to an e-mail?
People have their own preferences as to organizing file locations. One suggestion is to create a folder where you can save files and photos for e-mailing. You may want to save all of your photos in My Photos and create sub folders for organizing. The important thing is to remember where you save the photos.
TopDelete e-mail that takes too long to download and comes back the next time I try to get my e-mail?
It usually means you have a very large file trying to download. You have to just wait for hours sometimes if the sender is sending a picture saved as a bitmap file. If you cancel a download, the next time you download you will get the same messages again that you got the first time. Until you get rid of the large file and download all messages, it will keep doing that.
You may have to call your ISP and ask them to delete it for you. You can also access your e-mail on your ISP's web site and delete it there.
When you get a big file like this, contact the sender and ask them to resend the picture as a JPEG instead of a bitmap which should reduce the size of the file.
TopAccess my e-mail when I am out of town?
If you have an e-mail address in Yahoo, Hotmail, Excite, AOL, etc., you can access it on any computer by logging on with your user name and password. You can even go to a library and use their computers.
You can also go to your ISP's web site and access it there.
TopAccess my e-mail through AOL when I am out of town?
Go to www.aol.com and look for the Check AOL Mail Block on their home page. From there, you logon with the screen name and password to your personal account. The mail interface is not what you are used to, but it works.
TopClean up e-mail files?
Your Sent Items and Trash folders should be emptied out at least once a week. To have Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder automatically, click TOOLS / OPTIONS / MAINTENANCE. Put a check mark in Empty messages in the 'Deleted Items' folder on exit.
In Netscape, go to FILE / EMPTY TRASH IN LOCAL MAIL and then click.
TopOpen attachments when I get a message unknown format and it gives me an option to pick from?
If you get this message, your computer probably does not have a program that will open it. You need to find out from the sender what program he/she created the attachment. You may have to have it sent in plain text so you can read it.
TopMake a multiple address group for an e-mail such as relatives or Club members?
In Outlook Express, open the address book. Click FILE / NEW GROUP. Give the group a name and save. Click on the group and add the names from your address book.
In Netscape, open the address book and go the NEW LIST. Name the new list. Go to Address book and open the new list and drag the names from the address book to the new list.

I cannot view pictures e-mailed to me in Outlook Express. All I get is a red x.
If the pictures you are receiving have a red X in the upper left hand corner then the person that is sending you the email has a problem with their settings. If they use Outlook Express then the solution on how they need to fix their settings is below:
G0 to TOOLS / OPTIONS / SEND. At the bottom of that screen there are two boxes that say HTML settings. Click on these and a screen will come up and there is a box that says Send pictures with messages. If this box is not checked then you need to check so your pictures will go through.
